2014, you’re a bitch. I’m sorry that I’m calling you names, but you’re a bitch. Truth hurts buttercup.
I don’t normally do these things, mainly because I hardly ever blog, but this year was so astronomically kak, that I tried to sit down, focus and see the good, but right now it’s just not possible. Maybe one day, maybe soon. We’ll see.
Here is my year, in review, and thank god it’s over.
What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?
The thing that sticks out to me was seeing Eminem live in concert as well as being 2 rows from the front of the Golden Circle at the Foo Fighters gig.
Did anyone close to you give get married, give birth or die?
This year, at 10.17 on the 27th of November, I lost my father very suddenly. While he had been ill, what he had was never supposed to kill him.
What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
Mediocrity and uneventfulness. I don’t ask for much. I just want everyone to survive and for the general feeling of the universe taking a dump on our heads to go away.
What events from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Getting the phone call from the hospital to say my dad had taken a turn for the worst, and running through the hospital, the ER nurse throwing her hand out to indicate the direction of the ICU and telling me to run. Moments later, after hammering on the door to get in, seeing the curtains drawn around his bed, and knowing; seeing his emaciated figure lying flat in the bed, devoid of any tubes or pipes, and crashing to the ground.
What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I don’t really think I achieved anything.
What was your biggest failure/disappointment?
Being accused of racism and having to resign from my rather well-paying job which I happened to enjoy.
What was the best thing you bought?
Probably my iPad and our Netflix subscription.
Where did most of your money go?
Woolworths, who keep me fed and clothed.
What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Last minute excitement for the Foo Fighters is probably the first thing that comes to mind.
What songs will always remind you of 2014?
Walk – Foo Fighters. It has such resonance for where I am in my life, and having to learn to be normal again in the light of losing my Dad.
Compared to this time last year, are you: (a) happier or sadder? (b) thinner or fatter? (c) richer or poorer?
What do you wish you’d done more of?
Getting off my ass and exercising, and keeping up with my blog.
What do you wish you’d done less of?
Complaining, and feeling generally lazy.
How will you spend the festive season?
Spending it close to my Mom.
What was your love life like?
Committed, happy, warm.
What are some of your favourite things from this year?
Getting up every day was tough, but seeing my friends just after my Dad died was (in a weird way) a high-point. Also, just getting to see parts of Cape Town we’d never seen was amazing.
What was the best book you read?
I actually really fell in love with so many YA books – The Caster Chronicles, The Mortal Instruments, I don’t know what it is about these books, but I’m really enjoying them.
What was your greatest musical discovery?
I really don’t know actually, I want to say Marina and the Diamonds but I’ve known about her/them for ages and I know the music. I spent this year indulging in Audible books more than music.
What did you want and get?
I really don’t know. I’m a control-freak so I tend to get what I want.
What did you want and not get?
A proposal. Nudge nudge.
What was your favourite film of this year?
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (No, I’m not an adult).
What did you do on your birthday?
Dinner with the parentals I think.
What one thing that would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Keeping the job I enjoyed.
How would you describe your personal fashion concept?
Sorry? What? Fashion Concept?
What kept you sane?
My adorable babies Aragon and Gallifrey.
Which celebrity/public figure stood out this year?
I avoid celebs, but I adore Emma Watson. The He for She campaign caught my eye.
What political issue stirred you the most?
I avoid the circus that is politics in this country. However, Madam Zille being quite rude to people on twitter did catch my eye.
Who did you miss?
My dad, my best friend.
Who was the best new person you met?
Definitely Dave Luis
The most valuable lesson you’ve learned this year is:
Life is fleeting. It turns out that when you think you have months, or years, there is always a chance you only have hours. If someone is sick, be with them, work can wait, family is more important.
Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
“Shake it Off”. I’ve been a massive Swifty this year, and I’m only mildly ashamed of that fact. Let’s all be honest with one another and say she’s a very talented young lady, and she speaks to the old lady in me who kinda just wants to tell everyone to eff off.
Thanks for reading!
Love, and sloppy doxie kisses
